Dr Jon Fuller and Dr Viv Cook from the Centre for Medical Education, Institute of Health

Sciences Education delivered a one-week training programme to address a perceived lack of

expertise in PBL at Aksum University Medical School. This evolved into an intense week of

training to an extended group of 57 participants from 11 of Ethiopia’s 13 new medical

schools and representatives from the FMOH and Aksum University. The training was

positively evaluated. There is further consolidation work needed to support the

implementation of PBL which could include on-line mentoring as well as further visits by

academic staff. There is also the potential for future collaboration between students at

Aksum and B&L in the form of peer mentoring, student electives, research projects and

informal exchanges about clinical experiences. There is an expressed need from junior

doctors at Aksum for clinical mentorship.
